Fred Hoogerhyde opened his business in 1926, taking over a blacksmith shop at 1033 Leonard Street NW in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Initially the company did mostly automotive mechanic and body work, but they gradually took on safe work and locksmithing. Eventually the car work was dropped completely, except for working on car locks.
Hoogerhyde Safe is well known as THE PLACE to buy safes in Grand Rapids, especially gun safes. But we go well beyond Grand Rapids. That is a good thing because in most of Michigan there are no local safe dealers. We routinely deliver and service safes from the shores of Lake Michigan east to Flint, and from the Indiana line north to Traverse City and Petoskey.
You've probably invested thousands of dollars in your gun collection, and protecting it is a smart move. But pick the wrong gun safe or gun cabinet, and your investment could be gone in the blink of an eye. Many of the so-called "premium" gun safes sold at big box stores can be opened by a thief in less than 2 minutes.
The market is flooded with handgun safes and pistol safes that offer convenience and fast access. What most lack, however, is security. Many pistol safes are actually not safe at all against burglars. Plenty of them can be opened with a screwdriver, a piece of wire or even a paper clip. Weak latch systems can be broken easily.

Would recommend this place over and over! We called a few locksmiths around Grand Rapids and Ronny really saved us on Tuesday! Our key broke off in our lock on our moving truck the morning of our move. He told us to bring the truck in and he could try and fix it right away. He was seriously so nice and went out of his way to take a few minutes to help us out of a pickle even though their locksmiths were all busy. Don't go anywhere else!

I brought an antique cedar chest with a safe inside here to have the lock picked. The gentlemen working carried the chest inside for me, picked the lock, made keys for both the safe and chest, and carried it back out to my car for me - all for far less than I could have ever dreamed to have paid! I couldn't be more grateful and will be back soon to have a spare car key made (which they quoted at far less than the Kia dealership).

Awesome prices. Awesome staff. Awesome products. (Fort Knox safe). They explained all of the features of the safe, gave me a great price and I was also very pleased that they offered delivery. Their guys were professional, they laid down padding and protected the floor. Probably only took about 15-20 minutes. The guys here are amazing! They got me all set up with all 3 of my vehicles! Ordered the remotes I needed to use with my truck, made me a new key for my truck because mine broke, and the prices are very very reasonable! They had the cheapest prices around that I found! Highly recommend this place. Very fair priced and quick to get your needs met. On top of that they are willing to go above and beyond when it comes to service. My truck broke down in the parking lot and they quickly jumped to help me by jump starting/lending me tools, and even offering to give me a ride to get my battery checked out. Very happy with their service!
