On our 2018 Honda CRV, we got a dashboard message that said the battery in the key fob needed replacement. I did so and everything was fine. Then we got the message again so we changed the battery in the other fob. And that's where our problems began. After installation of the new battery, the red led light didn't blink. I went out to the car and it didn't do anything when I pressed the fob buttons.
Put the old battery back in. No bueno. Our both batteries on the meter. New = 3.4 volts. Old = 2.6 volts. Neither turned on the red light. San Leandro Honda have a condescending look when we asked if the fob was covered by the 30,000 mile power train warranty. My thought? If the fob doesn't work, the power train is useless because you can't start the engine. Anyway, they said that they could try to do some diagnostics but the easiest fix would be to order a new fob and have it programmed. 24-hours and $300+. Oakland Honda said essentially the same thing. $368 for a new key, never mind that we bought the car there.
The reason for the cost was the effort in programming the electronics. Please. I used to be an IT guy. You do to have to write a brand new script. You need to do some minor programming and flash the info into the fob. I did some online research and found The Key Shop. I sent a quick email to Rick and he responded that he could take a look at it. I called Rick.
He texted me where I could find him in 35 minutes and we drove down. He went right to work, systematically checking everything that there was to check. He noticed that the battery was very difficult to remove. He asked if I was sure that I had used the correct battery. I showed him the battery in our other fob and he noticed that two of the plastic prongs appeared to be pressed down and could be causing the battery not to make good contact.
Once he gently unbent the prongs, he reseated the battery and all was good. Total charge for his time and effort? $10. Way better than we could have hoped for. Rick, you THE MAN!

Excellent discovery when for some reason my factory car remote on my Chrysler 300 had stopped functioning. I called the dealer and did not like what they said. On a whim I called the Key Shop though I was not thinking of a locksmith for my car. But, great idea. It was close by, and the owner was very responsive. He immediately knew what was wrong with the old key (RKE it's called, remote keyless entry) and helped reprogram it.
I had a second occurrence within the warranty period and he kindly fixed it gratis. Fingers crossed, no problems since, and now I have an options should similar things happen in other cars.

I needed to get a pair of keys made for a friend of mine who has a roof rack on his car. Called the key shop and explained my situation and they were able to go out to my friends work, look at his roof rack and make a set of keys for him all in just an hour. Super quick and easy working with this company. It could not have gone any smoother! Thank You!

I just move into a new condo and was calling around to what seemed like local locksmiths for a price quote to rekey my locks. A lot of these companies that I called it seemed like I was talking to a dispatcher that couldn't give me an honest answer to my question. How much? I then called The Key Shop and talked to Rick, who was the one that answered the phone and he gave me a written quote through an email.
Very Cool! Upon arrival, Rick walked around with me so I could show him the locks and we actually found one more than what I originality told him. He told me not to worry and that he would still only charge me what he quoted. Rick was very professional and I would highly recommend them.

I called The Key Shop last week to have a few different jobs done that I had been puting off for a while. Rick was profesional and gave me a very fair estimates up front. He did not try and upsell me or come up with a bunch of mystery charges half way thorugh the job. More imporatantly, the service was prompt and professionally done and I would recomend them highly!

Looked up a locksmith for a rekeying of all the doors to our house. Came across Rick while researching online and he responded quickly with a very reasonable price quote. We were able to schedule a lock re-keying the very next day. He arrived a bit earlier than the scheduled appointment time, and greeted with a handshake and polite personality. I was able to have seven locks rekeyed (two more were last minute additions) and have three sets of keys made. Rick's entire workshop is in his van so this made the job fast, efficient, and complete. Rick also answered additional questions which were very helpful and informative. I highly recommend The Key Shop. Thank you.
